Introduction

Magic was recorded in 1980 by Olivia Newton-John and was performed on the soundtrack of the film Xanadu. It was number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 during August of that year. For those of a similar vintage, it makes a perfect ring tone, as it takes us right back to 1980, for many, our best decade.

We did not have mobile phones in 1980, and our music was still delivered on vinyl. It was not until 1984 that cassette tapes took over.
So we watched TV and played our vinyl records, and after a time we knew the words of magic by heart.
Magic is a restful track and makes a nice easy ringtone, and if we were sleeping it probably wouldn't even wake us up.

The song was written and produced by John Farrar, and when recorded it spent 5 weeks at the top of the charts. In the musical movie fantasy called Xanadu Olivia Newton-John played a muse from Mount Olympus, to which she must return. She appears in Xanadu as a waitress, and the movie and the soundtrack were both extremely popular in the early 1980s.
Xanadu was a natural progression from Grease a hugely popular movie starring Olivia Newton-John and released in 1978.

John Lennon

John Lennon named Olivia Newton John Magic, one of his favorite songs, just before he died in September 1980. A great tribute when there was so much good music to be heard.

Olivia Newton-John was a proud Australian in May 2011. Olivia was presented with the world premiere of the song Magic on Dancing with the Stars (Australia), and the song was released on iTunes.

Olivia Newton John Magic was included in both the film and Xanadu the musical. In 2015 she teamed with her daughter Chloe Lattanzi to rework the song's chorus into a new recording called 'You Have to Believe ' The song went to number one on the US Dance Club Charts.

Ring Tones

The great thing about ring tones is that we can change them constantly, so we never get tired of them and can bring them back whenever we want to. In 2018 Delta Goodrem performed Magic in the Olivia Newton-John mini-series.

On the 8th of August 2022 Olivia Newton-John died at her ranch, following years of battling breast cancer. However, the music lives on, especially our favorites and our ring tones.

The Legacy of Magic

Music is a legacy that never dies, and we are so lucky to have Olivia's music, that for many years was quite prolific. While the music lives on, she will never be forgotten. A few years back, DJ Dan Murphy tried to break a Guinness Book World Record in Sydney by gathering the largest cast in a music video, Magic, unfortunately, Olivia did not appear in it.

Magic lives on and tends to be a favorite, whether it is on a ringtone or remastered digital sound. Many other singers now play and sing Magic, but no one else quite measures up to Olivia.
