The French superstar Indila has written an incredibly captivating tale in her 2014 song "Love Story". At only 37 years of age, Indila weaves a tale into her lyrics better than anyone else. Showing the range that her voice can take as well as the inventive way that she mixes her instrumentals into the very emotions portrayed in her voice.

A Solid Narrative

The song begins with what appears to be a one-sided tale of love and wanting. Indila makes sure that we are aware of the point of view used because she begins first by giving us a small description of the man that will be our main character for this song. She calls him a "lost soul", telling us that even though he is alive physically, there is much left of him mentally.

Our main character's emotional state is battered so much so that we had to be assured of his living status. Quickly, we are brought into the next scene. From a character analysis to the somber setting of a man that is enraptured in a state of perpetual waiting.

According to Indila, he waits in front of a photo of former times. Now is when we begin to deviate from the relatively straightforward narrative. A dose of mystery is injected into these simple lyrics. We don't know if his lover is dead or not or we aren't aware if perhaps the relationship has run its course and they have broken up.

The mystery of their breakup could be amicable or it could have been messy. Perhaps they didn't break up and this is simply a tale of a failing long-distance relationship. There even exists the possibility of there never having been a relationship in the first place. This would mean that this "relationship' is as one-sided as the narrative up to this point.

Whatever the case, it is in these lyrics that we begin to see that not everything is straightforward.

The Mystery Unravels

The next lines in the song are meant to reassure us of the man's mental state. We are told that he is not crazy and that "he believes in it, that's all". It almost feels as if this is the main character himself now, speaking directly to the listener. Attempting to explain his actions and his behavior so that we can sympathize with him.

A sort of delusion is taking place within his mind. He sees his love everywhere and he stands waiting for her. A rose is in his hand, symbolizing the romance that he wishes to give her. The lyrics go on to explain that nothing makes sense without her, even the air feels heavy. Near the end of this particular verse, it is revealed to us that this man speaks with her "even when he is alone".

Again, we are assured of his mental state. "He is not crazy, no he just loves her", the evidence is beginning to mount that perhaps he was never in a relationship with her. Obviously, the main character wishes that this was not the case.

The central piece of evidence as to this conclusion is because at no point in the song are we told that he misses her. You can't miss something that you never had. She isn't away, this is a song of a man in love with a woman who doesn't know this.

The Truth Behind The Lyrics

Near the end of the song, the main character is speaking directly toward the woman he loves now. He tells her that, if she ignores him then he will offer her his last breath. In simpler terms, he is stating that he is willing to die for her. He wants her to make a pact that transcends blood, a pact to love and to make love.

The remaining verses of the song are split into two sections. In the first, he tells her that this is his love story. In the second, he tells her that this is her love story. It is safe to assume that this is Indila's way of telling us that he did eventually speak to the women he loves and was able to convince her of their future.
