Kenny started playing the clarinet at age 15 after being inspired by hearing an album of his favorite clarinetist, Artie Shaw. Once he had mastered the clarinet, Kenny taught himself how to play the alto saxophone from a book that he bought from an airport. Soon after, he began listening to artists like Cannonball Adderley and Nat King Cole.
Kenny's first performance was at 16, at the Seattle High School's spring concert. That same year he met a man named Charlie Marlow, who would greatly influence Kenny's music career and life. Charlie had Kenny play saxophone on his album, which meant he could play worldwide.
While Kenny was in high school, he began playing gigs at local clubs in Seattle and while working on his music career. In 1977, Kenny joined an ensemble called "The Jazz Couriers" with instrumentalist Tony Tipton, bassist David Herzberg and drummer Joe LaBarbera. However, after a year with them, he wanted to branch off independently.
