About Collide

Collide was released as a single in August 2014. The song features vocals from Justine Skye and Tyga and was produced by DJ Mustard. Collide blends DJ Mustard's signature minimalist production with electronic music trends of the time, replacing the more traditional bass in songs like Rack City and Ballin' with a subdued reese-like bass, complete with the filter sweeps and wubs that you'd expect from a dubstep or drum and bass song. 

Similarly, like most DJ Mustard tracks, Collide includes an abundance of sampled "heys" that accent various beats. These "heys" are carefully processed, filtered, and recorded in order to leave space for Justine Skye's elaborate vocals, often reducing them to little more than a whisper. The song is layered on top of a set of powerful sampled drums, with a distinctive 808-like kick, a clean clap, and a set of gentle hats and cymbals that lay down gentle ambiance in the upper frequencies without distracting from the rest of the track.

Justine Skye became an internet celebrity before she became a successful singer. Prior to being signed by a record label, her covers of songs received millions of views on YouTube and Tumblr. In 2013, at just 19 years old, she signed a deal with Atlantic Records, releasing singles and EPs until her album Emotionally Unavailable dropped in 2015.

Tyga, or Micheal Ray Stevenson, is from Compton, California. In addition to his solo work, he's been featured on tracks like The Motto with Drake and LIl Wayne. 

Tyga found a great deal of initial success in his vocal career. His albums and mixtapes between 2007 and 2010 garnered significant public interest. Deuces, the lead single on his mixtape Fan of a Fan, reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/ Hip Hop chart. His songs were also featured in video games like Need for Speed: Undercover and Madden NFL 2009. Tyga remained quite successful until around 2015, but between 2015 and 2018 he struggled to produce music that generated positive reviews and sold records. Since 2018, however, Tyga has had a resurgence of sorts, with his album Legendary reaching 17th on the Billboard 200 list.

DJ Mustard is a producer, beatmaker, and music maker who frequently works with YG, Ty Dolla Sign, and Tyga. DJ Mustard entered the public eye with Rack City, a Tyga song with a very distinctive minimalist hip-hop beat. DJ Mustard has also produced solo albums, including Perfect Ten, a 2019 album that peaked at 8th on US charts.

DJ Mustard's style is best summarized as "Fancy by Iggy Azalea," with the slight caveat that Fancy was not a DJ Mustard-produced song. Instead, the song Fancy is a perfect tribute to DJ Mustard's signature elements. It's a minimalist track with vocal samples of folks saying "hey," crisp claps, 808 kicks, and a clear bass that plays catchy, simple lines. Mustard refers to his style as "ratchet music."
