Nirvana's "Something In The Way" is a mellow but melancholic tune, written by front man Kurt Cobain and featuring Kirk Canning on cello. Debuting at the end of Nirvana's most popular album, "Nevermind," which was released in 1991, this song saw a resurgence in popularity in 2022 thanks to its use in Matt Reeves' film, "The Batman." Download the ringtone which includes the chorus of the original song.

The whole song is carried by two simple chords on acoustic guitar, alternating back and forth, each strum eerily even to the last in volume and intensity. Near the end, a haunting cello solo solidifies the sad but beautiful tone of the piece. The lyrics consist only of a single verse repeated twice and a chorus, the name of the song, repeated several times. It is as though the singer does not have the energy to use anything but rote memory to make his art. But art is still his passion. After all, he pursues it regardless of his numbness. Art still brings him some kind of meaning whether he feels it or not but there is simply something in the way of him accessing the satisfaction it once provided.

Maybe that is how Cobain felt when he wrote this song, or maybe that is one of many easy speculations to make about his art. Much has been said about him and he is often revered as a legend, so much so that the real man is often overlooked in favor of his public legacy and untimely passing. Some people claim he wrote "Something In The Way" about his time living on the streets; others say his homelessness was only a rumor started in the early 90's grunge scene. It is impossible to know exactly what he was thinking or what he meant by his songs, but the music speaks very well for itself and it does not need a definitive explanation. Regardless of legend or speculation, "Something In The Way" tells a vague yet clear story of being deeply hindered by an unseen obstacle.

With "Something In The Way," Cobain tells a story of being hurt, alone, and out in the cold world. With his voice almost a whisper and his guitar strings just barely vibrating, he sets the scene under a bridge where a tarp has sprung a leak. Maybe the rumors are true and this is where Cobain once lived, under a bridge with water dripping on him and no way to fix his makeshift ceiling. Or maybe this is somewhere he used to come to get away from the world and quiet the noise of life. He has trapped some animals who he feels are now pets under his control and responsibility. Maybe he has been gathering gathering mice and rats to keep him company, but in doing that he took away their freedom and made them dependent on him. The animals do not know any better; they just know he takes care of him and they like that.

He is living off of fish and drippings of water from the tarp on the ceiling. He does not go anywhere. He does not do anything. He simply sits under the bridge and catches a few drops of water if he is thirsty or a fish if he is truly starving. He says it is okay to eat fish since they do not have feelings. It sounds cold and callous and yet almost true. Of course fish having feelings, but are the feelings of one single little creature more important than the hunger of a more powerful animal? Maybe, maybe not, but the singer's voice is too worn and tired to care. There is something powerful in the way of his empathy. He is a small creature who is dependent on a much bigger beast that might just eat him alive.

Nirvana's "Something In The Way" is a simple but dramatic and deeply touching song about human suffering. It is so specific in its tone and yet so vague with its precise meaning, leaving interpretation open to each individual listener.
